Sumi-e - sumi (ink) and e (painting) is an ancient Asian art form that uses only black ink, water, and paper.

With its dinstinctive brushstrokes and minimal materials, semi-e captures light, shadow, volume, and perspective with subtlety and depth, reflecting a sense of calm and simplicity.

the course also introduces Bokisaiaga, a technique that blends ink with Japanese watercolour (Gansai).

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:

Karou is a Sumi-e artist and certified instructor accredited by the International Sumi-e Association in Tokio under Master Katori Kinsui. Originally from Japan now based near Barcelona, she has been teaching Sumi-e since 2013in art universities and other institutions across several European cities.

What you will learn:

-Introduction to the history and philosophy of Sumi-e, its essential materials, and fundamental brush techniques through the study of the Four Gentlemen.

-Exploration of flora, fauna, and landscapes, with a focus on brushwork, texture, composition, negative space, depth, and tonal variation ink.

-Study of traditional Japanese artworks for inspiration and technical insights.

-Creation of original paintings that integrate all learned techniques.
